For the SRH Tower in Heidelberg, AK Lichtdesign developed a bespoke light art concept that combines architecture, perception, and emotion. As a distinctive high-rise landmark in the cityscape, the tower fulfills an important orientation function in the urban environment.

The aim of the project was to reinterpret the building at night through an artistic lighting staging and to give it an independent, identity-defining presence. Light is not understood here as a decorative element, but as a design medium that consciously makes the architecture legible in a new way.

Challenge

The challenge was to achieve a strong long-distance impact without over-staging the tower. The light art was intended to respect the architecture, appear calm, and blend harmoniously into Heidelberg’s cityscape.

Solution

The light art concept is based on a reduced, architecture-related design.

1. Architecture-related light art
   The lighting staging follows the tower’s vertical structure and emphasizes its proportions.

2. Individual lighting scenes
   Developed scenes change the perception of the building over the course of day and night.

3. Calm and powerful presence
   Subtle light intensities create presence and identity without visual overload.

4. Integration into the urban space
   The light art strengthens visibility from afar while also blending sensitively into the urban surroundings.

The result is an artistic lighting staging that establishes the SRH Tower as a visible sign in the nighttime urban space and makes its architectural quality emotionally tangible.
