Llum BCN Light Installation

Services

Lighting concept, lighting design, wayfinding system

Type

Architectural lighting, cultural project, light installation, international project

Location

Barcelona, Spain

For the Llum BCN Festival 2023 in Barcelona, LedsC4 developed a lighting concept for orientation in urban space that guides visitors through the festival while also functioning as an independent light installation.

The main task was to create clear visual wayfinding through the Poblenou district and to connect the various installations with one another. The light sculptures used here serve not only as functional signage, but also as a design element that stages the public space and enhances the festival experience.

Challenge

The challenge was to develop a wayfinding system that is clearly visible in the nighttime urban space while also meeting the design aspirations of an international light festival. The solution had to be both functional and visually striking.

In addition, visitor guidance had to be consistent across multiple locations and allow for a clear differentiation between the various areas of the festival.

Solution

  1. Development of a light-based wayfinding system
Concept development of large-format light sculptures as orientation elements to guide visitors along the festival route.

  2. Design reduction with a clear formal language
Use of circular elements as a recurring motif to create high recognizability in the urban space.

  3. Color coding for navigation
Use of different light colors to clearly assign installations and central areas within the festival.

  4. Integration into the urban space
Positioning of the light objects along central routes in the Poblenou district to connect the individual festival locations.

  5. Extension through additional light installations
Supplementing the project with additional artistic works as part of Off Llum BCN to deepen the content and design context.

The result is a functional yet independently designed wayfinding system that provides orientation, activates the urban space, and makes the festival experience as a cohesive whole tangible.
